SYSAV, South Scania Waste Company, Sweden
SYSAV, a regional waste management company in the southern part of Sweden, was founded by 9 local authorities in 1974 – with the goal to maximise the recovery of material and energy and to minimise the landfilling. Since then, SYSAV has developed from a company dealing with mostly waste incineration and landfilling of household waste into a company responsible for an integrated waste management of the waste of the region.
Since 2004 is SYSAV owned by 14 local authorities dealing with household waste, industrial waste, bulky waste, construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, health care waste, electronic waste, waste paper etc. To be able to handle all these kinds of wastes correctly, saving the environment and natural resources, SYSAV works with a combination of many methods – separation and sorting, recycling, waste-to-energy, biological treatment, and with landfilling of inert waste and of waste residues from the treatment methods.
The eco-cycle approach is the very foundation of SYSAV´s operations and our strategy is to invest in a combination of methods to achieve the most recycling possible. Our aim is to continuously improve and through regional cooperation fulfil the increasingly high environmental requirements; the high cost-effectiveness and we offer the best possible service.
SYSAV ensure that as much waste as possible is reused or recycled as material or energy. By using different methods SYSAV can ensure that each type of waste is dealt with in the best possible way. High-energy waste is recycled as heat to the district heating system and as electricity. Garden and park waste becomes nutrient-rich compost and prepacked soil. Construction and demolition materials are sorted and resold. Wood is shredded into chips and sold as fuel. SYSAV deals with hazardous waste and receives and dismantles electrical and electronic scrap. Waste collection and transport is handled by the municipality’s themselves and by contractors engaged by municipalities and companies.
In 2008 SYSAV received in total 835 000 tonnes of waste. 95 percent was recycled as energy or materials and only 5 percent of the total amount of waste in the SYSAV group was landfilled. A similar result was achieved in 2007 and the result for 2009 is expected to be the same. All the recycling and treatment was carried out using the most advanced technology for the environmental protection, and very well meeting all EU- and national legislation and directives.
By using a combination of methods SYSAV is able to reach its overall goal; to recycle the most possible and landfill the least possible, in consideration of the environment.
